DUBAI: Perfume is an essential part of the beauty regimes of Arab men and women. According to Euromonitor, the Middle East perfume market is expected to reach $ 4.4 billion in 2027, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates being the two largest perfume markets in the region.

These statistics prove to be hugely beneficial to the revenues of luxury brands, many of which have produced fragrance lines designed specifically for regional consumers.

“Middle Eastern consumers, they are really in love with the perfume,” said famous French nose Fanny Bal, who recently imagined Loubiprince, one of the musk-infused scents that make up Christian Louboutin Beauty’s unisex fragrance collection. launched exclusively for the region. .

Loubiprince is the fruit of the French nose Fanny Bal. Provided

“Perfume is part of the culture in the Middle East. It goes much further than in any other region of the world, ”she added.

When it comes to their preferences, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates both favor traditional scents and tend to look to scents with powerful ingredients like oud and musk, she said.

“It was very interesting to develop the perfumes because we can go further in the intensity and the choice of ingredients. Unlike Europe or America, where consumers prefer fruity or floral scents, we were able to explore stronger notes that we would not typically use for the European market, ”said Thomas James, Brand Director for niche brands at Puig. “For example, we wouldn’t use incense for European customers, but in the Middle East, of course, incense is so important.”

For this specific scent, Bal – who designed fragrances for Givenchy, Frederic Malle, Issey Miyake, and even pop star Shakira – looked at ingredients that have become synonymous with Middle Eastern scents, including resin, amber, spices and sandalwood.

The three-piece fragrance collection pays homage to the Middle East. Provided

Two other perfumes make up the exclusive Louboutin collection: Loubicharme and Loubiluna from French perfumer Christophe Raynaud.

Loubiluna is a blend of fig milk, cedarwood and papyrus, while Loubicharme features floral notes of geranium and rose balanced by frankincense and patchouli.

Besides the ingredients, Christian Louboutin also paid homage to the region in the presentation of each perfume. They come in an opulent red bottle with a gold cap depicting a scarab, pyramid and crescent moon.

Bal reveals that Louboutin’s roots served as the starting point for the collection. The designer, best known for his red-soled shoes, was born in Paris to a French mother and an Egyptian father, a discovery he only recently made. Godfather of the partly Egyptian model Elisa Sednaoui, he has always felt a link with this North African country. He owns a property in Luxor, a purchase made long before he discovered his inheritance.

For example, one of the main ingredients used in perfumes is papyrus, a thick paper-like material that was used in ancient Egypt for writing. “When you think of papyrus, you also think of Egypt. Perfumers don’t often use papyrus, but it made sense with the Louboutin story,” Bal shared.

Watchmaker Hamilton joins the festivities for the birthday of Elvis Presley, the American brand highlighting one of Elvis’ favorite watches: the Hamilton Ventura.

Originally launched in 1957, the Ventura has a history of movie cameos – perhaps most notably, an appearance on Elvis’s Chad Gates wrist in the 1961 musical, Hawaii Blue. Thanks to the unique triangular shape of the Ventura, moviegoers immediately identified the timepiece. This King’s endorsement propelled the already popular Ventura to new heights and ensured the continuous reissues of the watch.

Fast forward to the present day and, in our opinion, the Ventura’s retrospective futurism is still so cool. Hamilton recently launched a new iteration of the classic watch, dubbed the S Quartz, as seen below. It features a 3D illusion design on the face, a comfortable rubber strap and, of course, the iconic triangular shape. Inside is a reliable quartz movement. Priced at $ 725 online, the S Quartz is available in black and white colourways and is a fine timepiece for Elvis fans and watch collectors.

Elvis endorsement aside, the Ventura is still a celebrity in watch culture. It was the first watch to use an electric movement, and this innovation was reflected in the Ventura’s unique futuristic look.

Decades after its appearance in Hawaii Blue, the Ventura landed another Hollywood role as a watch worn by anti-alien agents in Men in black. You can spot the watch on the stars of the four Men in black films, including Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Tessa Thomson and Chris Hemsworth.

The watch follows other Elvis-related products released to coincide with what would have been the artist’s 87th birthday on January 8 – the Elvis estate recently gave the green light for an officially licensed release of ‘Elvis Whiskey and Elvis Rye.

ALBUM OF THE DAY

Vis-a-Vis, “The best of Vis-a-Vis in the Congo style”

By Megan Iacobini de FazioJanuary 07, 2022

Have

Have

I can say with some certainty that it’s the funk grooves, distorted sounds and spiky horn lines of Vis à visThe sprawling “Aboagyewaa” which introduced me to African music several years ago. Their catalog alone gave more than enough for a relative novice to explore: between 1975 and 1982, Vis-a-Vis released 13 albums, some more experimental than others, but all combining Ghanaian highlife with afrobeat beats, funk grooves, cosmic synths and jazzy brass. . They helped propel the legendary highlife singer K. Frimpong to fame, but they were more than a backing band. While flirting with different technologies and genres, Vis-a-Vis has created a hypnotic and meandering highlife style that is both witty and dancing.

On their album The best of Vis-A-Vis in the Congo style, the latest reissued by the Toronto label We are busy bodies (following the reissues of Odo Gu Ahorow, Di Wo Ho Ni, and the seminal Obi Agye Me Dofo), Vis-a-Vis departs from their signature style and adds a heavy dose of Congolese rumba to the mix. Born out of the Cuban sound wave of the 1930s and 1940s, Congolese rumba invaded the continent in the 1970s and became a major influence on many styles of popular African music. Few bands, however, have taken it in the direction Vis-a-Vis has taken on this record: with singer Isaac “Superstar” Yeboah, Sammy Cropper on guitar, Slim Manu on bass, Gybson “Shaolin Kung- Fu »Papra on drums, and a cast of other musicians, TThe best of Vis-A-Vis in the Congo style effortlessly combines the sunny atmospheres of highlife with the harmonized vocals and agile guitar playing of rumba.

During the opening “Medofo Pa”, the musicians sing in unison, Congolese style, on a riff of bouncy keys and a thumping bass that turns in a crescendo loop, before a melodic and fluid horn line emerges. bursts out amidst the applause and chants. It’s unique to hear Twi’s lyrics among those typical rumba sounds, but Vis-a-Vis is so sure of himself that it performs flawlessly, emphasizing the band’s versatility and pan-African perspective. On ‘Cherie Bondowe’, a cover of Mayaula Mayoni’s original from 1974, the harmonized vocals sound as if they’ve come straight out of a Kinshasa nightclub, but the syncopated rhythms and rolling basslines give it a twist. more funky. Guitarist Sammy Cropper practices the tight and repetitive riffs of “Efre Adofo”. He relaxes a bit on the opening notes of the next track “Nsenkeka Adooso”, just as a deceptively airy horn line begins to slide over a bed of playful percussion and organ riffs.

The punchy brass beats and nasal guitars at the end sound like the celebration of the collision of different musical worlds. It is an appropriate ending to this record which sheds light on another facet of this infinitely talented and multifaceted group.

In 2022, I think it’s officially safe to say that BTS’s RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Junkook are the epitome of style icons. When members aren’t breaking musical records, they follow and set fashion trends. Now that they have their own Instagram accounts, we are able to gain a better insight into each member’s personal style. Concrete example: J-Hope teaches us to compose the perfect winter ensemble.

Rapper “Daydream” – who is known as one of the faces of Louis Vuitton – took to Instagram to share some lovely OOTD photos captioned “#hold”. As one fan page, the photos showed J-Hope doing several poses while wearing an oversized asymmetric Raf Simons cardigan, Cactus Jack For Fragment Sunrise sweatpants and a crinkle Ader beanie with a beige Readymade Fur Big Chain bag.

West Side Story star Rachel Zegler looked amazing in stylish ensembles in a stunning new shoot for Wonderland magazine.

The 20-year-old actress, who stars as Maria in the Stephen Spielberg remake, flaunted her toned figure in a mini dress and flowing gowns as she solidified her star status with the set.

The star wowed in a black backless dress with a beaded sash, which revealed her toned pins.

Her raven braids were styled in a chic bun with wavy locks framing her face.

The cover image saw the star posing in an off-the-shoulder sheer white tulle dress, while sporting wet-looking braids.

Rachel then put on a stunning show in a sheer white, purple and green watercolor dress with a flowing train.

“To say that you were one of the 30,000 seen by Steven Spielberg is an honor,” said the actress. “Getting the part is an even greater honor. ”

Either way, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner and Rita Moreno returning to his groundbreaking film 60 years later, the lavish $ 100 million production has already generated significant buzz for the Oscars.

Six months ago, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights launched with $ 11 million six months ago, while Dear Evan Hanson debuted with $ 7.4 million in September.

West Side Story is one of the most beloved musicals. The 1961 film, directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, grossed $ 43.7 million (roughly $ 400 million adjusted for inflation) and won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.

Hopes have long rested on Spielberg, with his spectacular song and dance, to bring back some of the movies’ mojos. Instead, not much right now outside of Marvel’s versions is finding a mainstream audience.

The film grossed $ 4.4 million in 37 overseas territories. Because the film features a transgender character, it has been banned in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait.

David A. Gross, who heads movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment, called the opening “sweet.”

If West Side Story is to be profitable, it will have to connect internationally and nationally, ”Gross said in an email to TBEN. “So far the first European openings have been good, but it will be a challenge with shooting conditions as difficult as they are.”

Spielberg’s film was a long time coming. Its release was delayed for a year by the pandemic. It was developed by 20th Century TBEN, which was acquired by Walt Disney Co. shortly before production began. Days before its Lincoln Center premiere, revered musical lyricist Stephen Sondheim died at the age of 91.

The weekend runner-up went to Disney’s Encanto animation, which held up well in its third week, losing just 27% from the previous weekend. It grossed $ 9.6 million from Friday to Sunday, bringing its cumulative total to $ 71.3 million domestically and $ 80.5 million internationally.

Milton Avery exhibition fosters a new appreciation of the painter’s distinct style http://afion.net/milton-avery-exhibition-fosters-a-new-appreciation-of-the-painters-distinct-style/ Mon, 03 Jan 2022 12:02:17 +0000 http://afion.net/milton-avery-exhibition-fosters-a-new-appreciation-of-the-painters-distinct-style/

Milton Avery could too easily be considered a mediocre painter of landscapes and figures.

His early works often reveal that the artist is looking for a type of painting that he may not have been able to achieve. They are not uninteresting but only occasionally reveal the spark of assurance and vision present in his later works.

A comprehensive exhibit at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art brings together a selection of around 70 of the influential artist’s works from the 1910s to the mid-1960s that show his growth as a painter.

In a painting like Hills (circa 1930) Avery depicts a handful of awkwardly rendered trees along a grayish-yellow hill. The ham fist representation seems inexperienced, even amateurish. In Little Fox River (1942), however, we begin to see Avery adapt his unsightly pictorial inclinations towards a stylization of branding that portends clarity and confidence to come.

“Sails in Sunset Sea” (1960) seems to be the culmination of Milton Avery’s slightly touched approach to painting.(Evie Bishop / Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art)

Look at how he reduces the ocean to a series of marbled blues with black ribbon lines drawn to suggest rippling waves. See how the trees in the foreground are nothing but a scribble of dark markings.

These pictorial decisions highlight how Avery began to change his art by adopting an alphabet of calligraphic patterns and simple shapes.

When viewing Avery’s paintings, it is important to refrain from holding the doctrinal notion that art has value only in its execution and display of technical prowess. It is useful to give oneself to the art that we see, to be slow to criticism, and rather to let the gestalt of the painting saturate us: to absorb the ethos that the artist presents.

If we can put aside our prejudices and demands for a particular type of craft, we can see what lies ahead. This in-depth visualization allows a more precise and complete register of a work of art to materialize.

Avery’s art demands this kind of viewing. When the eyes are open enough, we discover the quirky restraint and crazy manner found in most of Avery’s works. We notice and can appreciate his distinct voice in the rawness of his bill. I think of his art as tense but painfully beautiful musical voices, like that of Tom Waits or Johnny Cash.

Over time, Avery’s reductionist approach to his art becomes more cohesive. In his later works, he uses a shorthand which is not unlike that of the beloved Henri Matisse. Like Matisse, Avery eliminates everything except what he deems essential in his paintings.

Yet where Matisse’s refinements tend to emphasize an elegant line or form, Avery’s are more groping and human in their wobbly attenuations. In Friends (1961), we see two bathers side by side in conversation. The drawing of the two women is spontaneous, caring little for natural proportions or shadowed light. Instead, Avery gives out just enough information to capture the relaxed poses in a carefree moment.

Likewise, in Two digits (1960), the artist reduces visual information to the strict minimum. In this case, two women wearing gray-blue sun hats lean against a railing. They are almost ghostly pale with a fine application of paint. Avery delicately and effectively describes their skin and swimwear with relaxed aplomb.

A magnificent gestural pattern surrounds the figures, organizing a pictorial space while flattening the canvas to highlight the paint floating on the surface. This proves a visual experience that is both simple and complex.

Part of Avery’s charm is undoubtedly the way he draws people almost carelessly or how he clarifies a picture of the natural world.

In "A hint of autumn" (1954), Milton Avery renders the dead point of a lonely tree in an elongated vertical painting.
In “Hint of Autumn” (1954), Milton Avery renders the dead point of a lonely tree in an elongated vertical painting.(Adam Reich)

In A hint of autumn (1954), the artist renders the dead point of a lonely tree in an elongated vertical painting. Rusty foliage clusters and bubbles overlap the stiff trunk and stand out against a beautifully layered background.

Perhaps Avery’s strength lies in his ability to embody the energy seen in the art of young children – an energetic fabrication without constraints or inculturated rules and methods. This does not mean that he is an unlucky scholar, but that within his skills and pictorial approach, the artist allows something unvarnished and direct to be born.

I was amazed at the supernatural perfection Sails in the sea at sunset (1960) feels. It seems to be the culmination of Avery’s lightly touched approach to painting. A dirty pink sea is perfectly suggested by a handful of sinuous lines and two sailboats of elemental shape.

Bucolic, restless and almost casual, this painting is only possible if done by someone who is supremely confident and capable. In his own way, Milton Avery was both.

Details

The Milton Avery exhibit is on view until January 30 at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art, 3200 Darnell St., Fort Worth. Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with overtime on Thursday until 8 p.m. For more information, visit themodern.org or dial 817-738-9215.

The band “WhoGrass” playing Fairfield explains the style of music; will perform on January 8 http://afion.net/the-band-whograss-playing-fairfield-explains-the-style-of-music-will-perform-on-january-8/ Sat, 01 Jan 2022 09:43:45 +0000 http://afion.net/the-band-whograss-playing-fairfield-explains-the-style-of-music-will-perform-on-january-8/

Jim Rea: It’s been 13 years now and we have the same five guys – My cousin, Gary Rea (upright, acoustic bass); Mark Cassidy (banjo); Chad Graves (dobro / steel guitar); Nolan Lawrence (mandolin) and myself (guitar.) All band members sing along. We’ve also taken a big leap of faith heading into 2022, and we’ve added a full-time drummer. We’ve been playing with him for the last few months, testing him, to see how he feels and how people react to him, and we love him so much. It’s breathed new life into it, new kinds of songs are coming out, and we’re looking for rock, funk and stuff like that. So we added a sixth member and his name is John Anderson.

Q: Tell us about your style of music.

A: We rely heavily on bluegrass with a double bass, banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and dobro, which is the slide guitar that you play on your lap. So we play bluegrass, and we focus on bluegrass festivals and writing bluegrass music. We wanted our bluegrass sound to have a progressive new side, but we are still firmly established in bluegrass. As we started playing more, a little bit of country crept in, but we’ve been mostly a bluegrass band, and kind of a wild card, if you will, as far as that style goes. Then we got into tribute acts and things like that, which we continue to do to this day, but we’re firmly rooted in bluegrass when it comes to our style. And now that we have a drummer, we’re going into country, into rock, into funk, and we’re exploring different genres.

Q: Is WhoGrass based on the music of The Who?

A: Absoutely. In 2015, we were approached by a gentleman named Louis Meyers, one of the co-founders of SXSW, and he was the director of Folk Alliance, which is another music organization. We met him, and he always poked his head around the corner in our windows, and he told us in 2015 that he was looking for a band to arrange and record The Who’s famous rock opera, “Tommy” in as bluegrass opera… So we did it, and we toured all over the world, coast to coast, here in America, Australia, UK and all the way to Canada. It worked well for us for four or five years. Then we turned that show into WhoGrass. Instead of just making the “Tommy” album, we took all The Who hits from all of their records. We put them in chronological order, and we tell the story throughout The Who’s career, and now we’re playing a much more successful, accessible, choir-type show where all the songs were. among the top ten singles, if not number one hits of The Who. So, yeah, it has to do with The Who, and it’s based on The Who, done on bluegrass instruments. WhoGrass is just a smart name we give it. Bluegrass meets rock and roll is the motto of the show, and it’s a spin off of “Tommy” that we did in 2015. It’s The Who music that meets bluegrass sound or instrumentation.

Q: You’ve met Pete Townshend a few times and opened for The Who. What did he think of The HillBenders version of “Tommy?”

A: They got wind of our “Tommy” project and Pete Townshend, band frontman and lead songwriter contacted us and said, “We love him.”

Q: What are some of the ways you make The Who music your own?

A: … Our dobro player, we call him Keith Moon of the dobro, because he’s so punchy on his instrument. He hammers the thing and spins it around. He has that intensity. We all try to make the music as percussive and as big as possible because The Who is a giant rock icon. We naturally have a part of that, and I think that’s why Louis chose us, but we know that in these beautiful, big rooms, we have to make sure and really accentuate that. So we open ourselves up to be as big as possible. We use two, three or four part harmonies on the songs. We involve the crowd, so they sing and clap to some parts, making sure that we can fill the space as much as possible. We travel a lot and love to interact with the public. So that’s the kind of thing we do to make these WhoGrass shows as special, big, and enjoyable as possible, and entertaining is the main thing.

Q: Regarding the original music of the band, what did you work on?

A: Last week we just released a new single, “Every Time I Go Away” with drums on it. We definitely got out of bluegrass, more acoustic rock with this song. We are proud of it. It’s everywhere on our social networks, on Spotify and Apple Music. There is also a great video with it. We were founded on the original music and that is what we will continue to do. The blanket was just a stepping stone for us. With every show we do, we try to give the audience four, five, or six original songs at the end of the show. In this way, we integrate the original music into the show and we continue to share our creativity with the audience.
